S-Meter Collection

An S-Meter, or Signal Strength Meter, is one of the most recognizable instruments found on amateur radio transceivers. It measures the strength of incoming radio signals, giving operators a quick visual indication of how well a station is being received.

Whether you're making a local contact, working a rare DX station, or operating from a park, the S-Meter helps you understand changing propagation conditions and compare received signal levels. While modern radios display this information digitally and older transceivers often use analog meters, the purpose remains the same—helping operators evaluate signal strength.

Most S-Meters use the familiar S1 to S9 scale. Lower readings indicate weak signals, while higher readings represent stronger, more easily copied transmissions. Once a signal exceeds S9, strength is commonly expressed in decibels above S9, such as S9 +20 dB or S9 +40 dB.

Although individual radios may not be calibrated exactly the same, the S scale provides operators with a shared reference for discussing signal strength. You'll often hear operators mention values like "You're S7" or "You're S9 plus 20," giving the other station a general idea of how well they're being received.

Learning to interpret S-Meter readings helps operators better understand band conditions, antenna performance, and changing propagation throughout the day.
